Castle Pines sits on the pine-covered hills west of I-25, a few exits north of Castle Rock. The city was incorporated in 2008 as Castle Pines North and took its current name in 2010; the gated Village at Castle Pines to the south is a separate, unincorporated community.

Castle Pines North is mostly 1980s–2000s single-family homes on curving streets, many on wooded or hillside lots with mountain views. The Canyons, on the east side of the city, adds newer construction with its own trail network and amenity center. In the gated Village at Castle Pines, custom homes sit on large lots around two private clubs.
Daniels Park, just to the northwest, has a resident bison herd and one of the widest Front Range panoramas in the metro. Trails and open space run through the neighborhoods, and the Village is home to Castle Pines Golf Club and The Country Club at Castle Pines.
Shopping and dining cluster along Castle Pines Parkway, with Park Meadows and Lone Tree about ten minutes north and downtown Castle Rock about fifteen minutes south.
Castle Pines Parkway connects directly to I-25, putting the Tech Center about 20 minutes north and the RidgeGate light rail station in Lone Tree a short drive away.
